BTRS Case Study

Qualitrain has recently completed a highly successful 12 month project to design and deliver a bespoke, accredited training package to no less than 300 staff at Bombardier Transportation Rolling Stock UK Ltd, based in Derby.

BTRS provides the wiring looms for railway carriages and, following a significant new contract, needed to recruit large numbers of new staff. The new employees needed to be able to contribute effectively and to agreed standards as quickly as possible, and Qualitrain was called in to assist.

The first task was to carry out a Training Needs Analysis with the senior team at BTRS to identify the depth and level of engineering training and assessment required to meet the compliance requirements of the company.

Based on the data collected, Qualitrain developed the appropriate training material for an intensive one week electrical engineering course for wiring looms. Built into the course were all the appropriate company procedures and standard working practices, including relevant health and safety, and Qualitrain was able to ensure that the course would meet the specifications of a nationally recognised PMO qualification.

A graded practical and theoretical assessment was created and agreed with the customer and appropriate feedback forms were provided so that managers had reliable information on the abilities of the recruits prior to them starting work.

In the subsequent months no less than 300 new starters and another 100 existing employees passed through the programme, all gaining a Performing Manufacturing Operations qualification at Level 2 under the Adult Apprenticeships scheme. The process of achieving the qualification had the effect of raising internal quality standards and increasing efficiency throughout the operation, and produced valuable new training materials and training management procedures for future use.

"Qualitrain has proved itself well able to be an important part of the team at Bombardier, carrying out Core Competency training for all temporary staff, which has been integrated with qualification in Performing Manufacturing Operations. As well as the PMO qualification. Qualitrain has implemented Business Improvement Techniques training across the company to help enhance the World Class Manufacturing aims of the business.

The quality of Qualitrain's input, and the hard work put in by their team, brought great success with this project, with 100% pass rate at Level 2. This has given us the confidence to progress the training project, and 125 Bombardier candidates are now about to undertake a Level 3 BIT qualification under Qualitrain's guidance.

In addition to these training projects, we have been very impressed with Qualitrain's depth of understanding of manufacturing processes and the company's ability to devise and implement solutions. Large numbers of business improvement opportunities have been identified by Qualitrain and, with their assistance, we are now in them process of carrying them out. I would have no hesitation in recommending Richard Bates and his team as excellent partners to even the largest of manufacturing businesses. The quality of their work and the value of the improvements we have made - in terms of cost and time saved - speak for themselves."

Flexible Core Competency Training for BTRS

Qualitrain has recently developed a highly successful Core Competency training package for twelve Team Leaders at BTRS, delivered as part of the Business Improvement Training Level programme.

Demonstrating the flexibility of the resource, and Qualitrain’s ability to develop training resources which are tailor-made to meet the needs of the company concerned, this package was then delivered to the main workforce for the level 2 Performing Manufacturing Operations NVQ, and then again as a one week training programme for new starters.

“We’ve now developed training resources for BTRS involving literally hundreds of candidates,” said Qualitrain’s Leon Bowler, “and in each  phase we have been able to use existing frameworks in a way which fits perfectly with Bombardier’s Operating System.

“In this way, not only are the training objectives met, but the client company’s own development programme and quality regime is supported simultaneously.”
