AI on the rise

  • AI business uptake is growing fast but remains shallow, with only 35% of UK businesses adopting AI into their workflow. However, a major skill gap exists: while up to 80% of professionals use AI monthly, only 29% are highly familiar with it, and just 34% of companies currently mandate AI skills training.
  • The demand side of AI & Data tells a similar story. Government research into the UK's data skills gap found that businesses are recruiting for up to 234,000 data roles, with over half of organisations preferring to build this capability internally rather than recruit externally
  • The trajectory of these statistics highlights a clear evolution from experimentation to enterprise integration. Over the next 3 to 5 years, the landscape is projected to shift from "shallow" employee-led use to deeply embedded corporate systems

Data & AI Apprenticeships – Building Capability for the Future

As a natural evolution of our highly successful Improvement Apprenticeships, many of our customers are now driving transformation through data-led and AI-enabled improvement projects. To support this growing demand, we have expanded our apprenticeship portfolio to help organisations develop the skills needed to harness data, automate processes and make better business decisions.

We are now delivering four specialist programmes:

  • Level 4 Automation & AI Practitioner
  • Level 4 Business Analyst
  • Level 3 Data Technician
  • Level 4 Data Analyst

These apprenticeships provide practical, workplace-focused learning that enables your employees to deliver real business improvements while developing in-demand digital and analytical skills.

To give organisations maximum flexibility, we are offering both open programmes and closed company cohorts. Our open programmes start every three months, allowing learners to join at regular intervals, while our closed programmes can be tailored to support specific organisational goals and transformation initiatives.

These new Apprenticeship Units provide employers with a flexible and cost-effective way to upskill existing staff in specific areas of need. Unlike a full apprenticeship, these short, focused programmes are designed to address immediate skills gaps, helping businesses improve productivity, respond to changing industry demands, and develop workforce capability without the commitment of a longer qualification. Importantly, eligible employers can fund these units through their Apprenticeship Levy, making them an accessible investment in workforce development

Engineering Academy's New Units

Two of the first engineering units available are:

  • Mechanical Fitting and Assembly
  • Electrical Fitting and Assembly.

These 2 new programmes are aimed at employed engineering operatives and technicians who need to strengthen their practical skills in assembly, fitting, fault finding, safe working practices, and the interpretation of technical documentation.

We Deliver these units over a short timeframe, offering a practical route to developing job-ready skills while supporting business growth and operational efficiency.

Supporting Customers Through Apprenticeship Reform

Government Defunding

The Government's decision to defund 16 apprenticeship standards has created significant uncertainty for employers looking to invest in workforce development. Among the programmes affected are two of Qualitrain's most popular apprenticeships: the Level 4 Improvement Practitioner and Level 6 Improvement Leader. Whilst we do not believe this is the most sensible move for developing the UK's improvement capability, we recognise the importance of providing practical and effective alternatives for our customers.

Goodbye to Level 4 Improvement Practitioner

For organisations that have traditionally utilised the Level 4 Improvement Practitioner, Qualitrain has developed the new Level 4 Quality & Improvement Practitioner apprenticeship, launching in September 2026. By combining the strengths of the L4 Quality Practitioner and Improvement Practitioner, this programme reflects the natural overlap between the two disciplines. Learners will develop the skills required to improve processes, enhance customer satisfaction, reduce waste and drive sustainable operational performance.

Our solution to the Level 6 Improvement Leader

For customers seeking an alternative to the Level 6 Improvement Leader, the Level 5 Improvement Specialist continues to be the preferred choice, delivering many of the leadership, change and improvement capabilities organisations require. Qualitrain offers both programmes through open and closed cohorts, with the Level 5 Improvement Specialist currently starting every three months, providing organisations with a flexible route to continue developing their improvement talent pipeline.
