Apprenticeship Units are: Fast, Funded Upskilling for Mechanical and Electrical Skills

An apprenticeship unit is not an apprenticeship. It is a deliberately different product, and the distinction matters more than the confusing shared name suggests. Where a full apprenticeship standard usually runs for a year or more and is built around a new entrant learning a whole occupation, an apprenticeship unit is a short, sharply focused course built around one existing employee closing one specific skills gap.

Two of the first units to reach approval sit squarely in engineering and manufacturing. AU0003, Mechanical Fitting and Assembly, and AU0005, Electrical Fitting and Assembly, were both approved for delivery on 17 March 2026 and became available to start from 28 April 2026. Both sit at Level 2. Both are funded through the apprenticeship levy. Neither requires an employer to take on a new apprentice to use them.

This piece sets out what apprenticeship units actually are, what is in these two specifically, why they can be shaped around almost any industry despite a fixed national curriculum, how flexible the delivery model really is, and what the funding position means for employers sitting on unspent levy funds right now.

What an Apprenticeship Unit Actually Is

Apprenticeship units are a new category introduced as part of the wider Growth and Skills Levy reforms, designed to let employers upskill their existing workforce in a critical skill shortage area without committing to a full apprenticeship standard. Each unit runs for between 30 and 140 hours, delivered over a period of one to sixteen weeks, which is a fraction of the twelve-to-eighteen-month-plus duration typical of a standard apprenticeship.

They are built for employed learners aged 19 and over, and the starting point is always the same: the employer has already identified a specific, immediate skills gap and needs it closed quickly to support business growth or productivity, not a multi-year development programme for someone new to the role.

Assessment is proportionate to the scale of the course. As a minimum, learners sit a skills test delivered by the training provider, which the employer then validates. Employers or learners also have the option of an extended, independent external assessment where that level of rigour is useful, for example where a formal record of competence is needed for compliance or client assurance purposes.

How This Differs From a Full Apprenticeship Standard

A full apprenticeship standard, such as the Level 2 Engineering Operative or Level 3 Engineering Technician standards, are designed around someone new to an occupation. It runs for up to 4 years, covers the full breadth of knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to do the job, and ends in end-point assessment against the whole occupational standard. It is the right tool when a business is bringing someone into engineering from scratch.

An apprenticeship unit solves a narrower, more immediate problem: an existing member of staff who is competent in their role overall but has one specific, identifiable gap. A mechanical fitter who has never formally been assessed on interpreting technical drawings, or an experienced technician moved onto electrical assembly work for the first time, does not need a year-long programme to close that gap. They need 70 hours of focused, assessed training on exactly that skill, and that is precisely what AU0003 and AU0005 are built to deliver.

Illustrative example: a manufacturing employer with an experienced production team finds that three operatives have been carrying out mechanical assembly tasks informally for months, without any recognised assessment of their competence against a national standard. Rather than enrolling them on a multi-year apprenticeship, the employer commissions a single AU0003 cohort, built around the actual assemblies those three operatives work on, and has all three formally assessed within a matter of weeks.

Two New Units for Engineering Employers

AU0003 and AU0005 were both published in the same approval batch and cover the two skill sets that come up most often when engineering and manufacturing employers describe a gap on the shop floor: putting mechanical assemblies together correctly, and wiring and terminating electrical components safely.

Both units cover the same foundational ground: health and safety legislation and safe systems of work, and interpreting specifications, drawings and technical documentation before touching any tools. From there they diverge into the practical core of each discipline, culminating in AU0005's specific requirement to wire, route and terminate a range of electrical cable types safely and to specification.

Built to Be Bespoke, Not Off-the-Shelf

The learning outcomes for each unit are set nationally, so every provider is working from the same core specification. What is not fixed is how that specification gets applied on the day. Delivery is built around the equipment, product range and working practices of the employer commissioning the cohort, so apprentices are learning to interpret drawings and terminate cables using the same components, tolerances and standards they will use in their own role the following week.

That is also what makes mechanical and electrical fitting and assembly genuinely industry-agnostic content. The same core competencies, reading a drawing, selecting the right tool, terminating a cable safely, sit behind roles in aerospace, food and drink manufacturing, automotive, rail and general precision engineering. A unit built around an aerospace employer's assemblies and a unit built around a food manufacturing employer's line equipment will look different in the room, even though both are delivering against the same AU0003 or AU0005 specification.

AU0003 and AU0005 give employers a funded, formally assessed route to the same kind of bespoke training QEA has already been delivering commercially, from motorsport component manufacture to rail vehicle maintenance. The sector changes. The core skill of interpreting a drawing and executing the work correctly does not.

Flexible Delivery, Including Fully Onsite Cohorts

A 70-hour course delivered over two to ten weeks is a fundamentally different scheduling proposition to a multi-year apprenticeship, and that flexibility extends to where and when the training happens. Delivery can be built onsite, around a specific employer's shift pattern, plant and existing team, rather than pulling staff away to a college or training centre for weeks at a time.

Fully Funded Through the Apprenticeship Levy

Maximum funding currently sits at £1,650 for AU0003 and £1,650 for AU0005, drawn from the same Growth and Skills (Apprenticeship) levy pot employers are already paying into, or from Levy co-investment for smaller, non-levy-paying employers. For a levy payer with unspent funds sitting in their account, this is existing money being put to use, not new spend.

It is worth being precise about what these units are for. The eligibility wording is explicit: apprenticeship units are for employed learners aged 19 and over, where the employer has identified a need to upskill quickly. This is a tool for developing people already on the payroll, not a recruitment route. An operative who has picked up mechanical fitting responsibilities informally, or an experienced fitter moved onto electrical assembly work for the first time, is a better fit for these units than someone starting from zero.

Funding for apprenticeship units remains under ongoing review. Skills England has stated it will keep advising government on the affordability and prioritisation of funding, and that notice will be given if funding for a unit is withdrawn, with a four-week cut-off for new starts after that notice. None of that changes what is available today, but it is a reasonable prompt to scope a cohort now rather than assume the current funding position holds indefinitely.

What This Means for Your Levy Account

If your business has unspent apprenticeship levy funds and a known gap in mechanical or electrical fitting competence somewhere on the shop floor, this is a narrow, fast, and fully funded route to close it without disrupting a whole team's output for months. Levy funds currently remain available for up to 24 months before they expire on a rolling monthly basis, but that window is closing. From 1 August 2026, new funds entering an employer's apprenticeship service account will expire after 12 months rather than 24, so balances that might otherwise sit idle have a shorter runway to be put to use.

The practical next step is straightforward: identify who on the team needs the skill, confirm the scale of the gap against the 30-to-140-hour scope of each unit, and get a bespoke onsite cohort scoped in before the next ten-to-twelve-week intake window opens. Because the units sit at Level 2 and are built around existing staff rather than new recruits, there is no need to run a recruitment process or restructure a role to make use of them.
