What Is A Data Technician?
Most organisations are collecting more data than ever before — from production outputs and quality metrics to sales figures, customer feedback and supplier performance. But collecting data and understanding it are two very different things. For many businesses, that data sits in spreadsheets, systems and reports that nobody has the time or skills to properly interrogate. The result is decisions being made on instinct rather than evidence, and opportunities for improvement that go unseen.
A Data Technician is the person who changes that. They source, organise, format and present data in a way that is meaningful, accurate and genuinely useful for the people who need to act on it. Working across teams and at all levels, they collect data from multiple internal and external sources, clean and validate it to ensure it is reliable, and communicate their findings in dashboards, reports and visualisations tailored to their audience — whether that is a team leader on the shop floor or a director in a board meeting.
This is a Level 3 apprenticeship and an ideal starting point for anyone embarking on a career in data. It also serves as a natural progression pathway into the Level 4 Data Analyst and Business Analyst programmes for those who want to develop further.
Who Is It For?
Data Technicians are found in every sector where data is generated or processed — which in practice means almost every organisation. This programme is particularly well suited to manufacturing, logistics, engineering, retail, finance, healthcare, education and the public sector.
It is ideal for individuals who are analytically minded, comfortable working with numbers and systems, and motivated to help their organisation make better use of the information it already holds. Whether you are developing an existing employee who shows data aptitude or bringing in a new hire to build this capability from the ground up, this apprenticeship provides a solid, nationally recognised foundation.
Typical job titles associated with this apprenticeship include:
- Data Technician
- Data Support Analyst
- Junior Data Analyst
- Junior Information Analyst
Typical Attributes Gained By Candidates
Data Handling:
Able to identify, access and extract data from a variety of internal and external sources, combine data sets from multiple systems, and format and store data in line with organisational standards and data protection requirements.
Analytical Thinking:
Applies basic statistical methods to identify trends and patterns in both structured and unstructured data. Uses tools and techniques to filter, cleanse and validate data sets — removing errors, duplicates and inconsistencies that would otherwise undermine the quality of any analysis.
Clear Communication:
Presents data findings using dashboards, charts, tables and reports that are tailored to the audience. Able to explain what the data shows in plain language — making insight accessible to colleagues who may have no technical background at all.
Legal and Ethical Awareness:
Understands GDPR, data protection legislation and the ethical use of data, including how data interacts with AI and automated systems. Handles data securely and compliantly at every stage — protecting both the individual and the organisation.
Continuous Learning:
Keeps pace with developments in data tools, technologies and best practice — including the growing relationship between data, machine learning and generative AI — taking personal responsibility for professional development throughout their career.

What Are The Benefits For The Business?
A Data Technician gives your organisation the internal resource to bridge the gap between the data you collect and the decisions you need to make. Rather than relying on periodic external reports or waiting for a senior analyst to find time, you have someone embedded in your business who can turn raw information into insight quickly and reliably.
For operations-focused businesses in particular, this capability is transformative. Imagine having someone who can pull together quality data, production output and supplier performance into a clear picture of where your process is underperforming — and do it routinely, not just when a crisis forces the issue. That is what a well-trained Data Technician delivers.
The programme also future-proofs your workforce. Apprentices gain an understanding of how data relates to AI and automation tools, meaning they are well positioned to support your organisation as these technologies become a greater part of how you operate.
How Long Does The Apprenticeship Take?
Typically, this apprenticeship will typically take 18 months to complete. Cohorts open in September 2026. Places are limited — register your interest now to secure priority access to programme information and funding guidance.
Is This A Government Funded Qualification?
Funding for the Data Technician Apprenticeship can be accessed through the Apprenticeship Levy. If you do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy, the Government will co-invest and fund 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship. The maximum funding band for this standard is £13,000.
If you have any questions about funding, Qualitrain's team is here to help — from setting up your Digital Apprenticeship Account through to identifying the right funding route for your business and your apprentices.
