What Is An AI and Automation Practitioner?
Most organisations already have more data and more digital tools than their teams know how to use effectively. Manual processes that should run automatically still rely on people. AI tools are being adopted faster than anyone has time to understand them. And for many businesses, the real question isn't whether to embrace AI — it's where to start and how to do it without exposing the organisation to risk.
AI and Automation Practitioners are trained to answer exactly those questions. They work across operational teams to identify where manual tasks, duplicated processes and disconnected systems are costing time and money — and then design, implement and test practical digital solutions to fix them. Using low-code and no-code tools alongside AI platforms, they build automations that save time, reduce error and free your people to focus on higher-value work.
Critically, they do this responsibly. Apprentices on this programme develop a thorough understanding of data protection legislation, intellectual property, AI governance and the ethical implications of automation — so your organisation benefits from new technology without taking on unnecessary legal or reputational risk.
Typical job titles associated with this apprenticeship include:
- Automation Enablement Consultant
- Digital Automation Specialist
- Process Automation Analyst
- Digital Operations Technician
- Business Process Support Executive
- Workflow Solutions Assistant
- Junior Innovation Consultant
- Technology Operations Coordinator
Typical Attributes Gained By Candidates
Analytical Thinking:
Identifies inefficiencies in existing systems and processes, assesses the feasibility of potential solutions, and makes evidence-based recommendations that give leadership teams the confidence to act.
Technical Confidence:
Able to configure and implement low-code and no-code automation tools, apply AI platforms to solve operational challenges, and design, integrate and test digital workflows that work reliably in a real business environment.
Responsible AI Practice:
Understands the legal and regulatory frameworks governing automation — including GDPR, data protection and employment rights — and applies ethical principles to every solution, ensuring transparency, fairness and accountability throughout.
Stakeholder Communication:
Translates complex technical concepts into plain language for non-technical colleagues. Designs and delivers training, produces user guides, and adapts their communication style to bring people with them through change rather than leaving them behind.
Improvement Mindset:
Monitors and refines automations based on real-world feedback, measures productivity and efficiency savings, and maintains awareness of emerging AI and automation developments — building a capability that grows with your business rather than standing still.
What Skills And Knowledge Will Be Achieved?
Apprentices develop a comprehensive understanding of AI and automation tools, their capabilities and their limitations — alongside the practical skills to select, implement and manage them within a real operational environment.
At Qualitrain, we go further than the standard curriculum. Our tutors bring hands-on experience of Lean Six Sigma and process improvement methodology into every module. This means apprentices don't just learn how to deploy technology — they learn to think like improvement practitioners first. They identify root causes, quantify waste, map processes and build the business case for change before a single tool is configured. The result is an AI and Automation Practitioner who delivers solutions that actually stick, because they were built on a proper understanding of the problem.

What Are The Benefits For The Business?
Organisations that invest in AI and Automation Practitioners develop an internal capability that most of their competitors are currently paying external consultants to provide — at significant cost and without any lasting knowledge transfer.
Your apprentice will identify where time and money are being lost to manual processes and inefficient systems, implement practical automation solutions using accessible tools, and ensure your organisation adopts AI in a way that is compliant, sustainable and genuinely understood by the people who use it every day. Concerns about IP security, data privacy and AI legislation are addressed head-on within the programme — so your business moves forward with confidence rather than caution.
Beyond the immediate efficiency gains, you build a workforce that is comfortable and capable around technology — reducing dependency on external support and positioning your business to adapt as AI continues to develop. For levy-paying employers, this is one of the most strategically valuable ways to deploy apprenticeship funding available today.
How Long Does The Apprenticeship Take?
Typically, this apprenticeship will take 18 months to complete. Cohorts open in September 2026. Places are limited — register your interest now to secure priority access to programme information and funding guidance.
Is This A Government Funded Qualification?
Funding for the AI and Automation Practitioner Apprenticeship can be accessed through the Apprenticeship Levy. If you do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy, the Government will co-invest and fund 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship. The maximum funding band for this standard is £18,000.
If you have any questions about funding, Qualitrain's team is here to help — from setting up your Digital Apprenticeship Account through to identifying the right funding route for your business and your apprentices.
